Who Pays Car Accident Medical Bills First?
Multiple payers can be involved
After a crash, medical bills may be submitted to:
- Your health insurance plan
- MedPay or PIP on an auto policy
- The at-fault driver’s liability insurer (later)
- Workers’ compensation if you were working
Coordination of benefits rules and liens can be complex. Hospitals may also file liens in some states.
Keep a paper trail
Request itemized bills, explanation-of-benefit statements, and a running list of providers. If you pay out of pocket for copays or therapy, keep receipts.
Gaps and denials
If a bill is denied, note the reason code. Sometimes coding errors or missing accident details cause delays. Addressing denials early prevents collections surprises months later.
